ASICS Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation that produces sportswear, primarily known for its athletic footwear (sneakers), but also manufacturing other types of footwear, apparel, and accessories. The company's name is an acronym derived from the Latin phrase "anima sana in corpore sano," which translates to "a sound mind, in a sound body." Founded in Kobe, Japan, on September 1, 1949, by Kihachiro Onitsuka as Onitsuka Co., Ltd., it initially focused on making basketball shoes and later expanded to become a global leader in sports equipment. In 1977, Onitsuka Co., Ltd. merged with GTO and JELENK to form ASICS Corporation.
